Why Add a Physics Minor?

You do not need to major in Physics to strengthen the quantitative reasoning and problem-solving skills used across STEM fields. The 28-credit Physics Minor combines a calculus-based core with upper-division study that complements work in mathematics, computer science, health sciences, environmental studies, and related areas.

Small Classes, Direct Faculty Access

Physics minor students benefit from small class sizes and direct access to professors who provide individual support, explain complex concepts, and guide students through classroom and laboratory work.

Hands-On Lab & Technical Skills

Physics minor students spend time in the laboratory, not just the lecture hall. Lab work builds practical skills in measurement, data analysis, and experimental problem-solving, and electives in electronics and optics add experience with the kinds of instruments and circuits used across science and technology fields.

Upper-Division Depth in Specialized Fields

In addition to studying the major areas of physics, Physics minor students gain depth in specific fields through upper-division coursework. Elective options include electronics, optics, computational methods, classical mechanics, and electricity and magnetism.

Physics Minor Requirements

The Physics Minor requires 28 credits. Students complete four required courses and select two Physics courses at the 300 level or above.

  • PHYS 251: Introduction to Electricity & Magnetism
  • MATH 320: Calculus I
  • MATH 330: Calculus II
  • PHYS 351: Modern Physics
  • Two Physics courses at the 300 level or above

Elective Courses Available

  • PHYS 301: Classical Mechanics
  • PHYS 303: Electricity and Magnetism
  • PHYS 305: Electronics
  • PHYS 371: Computational Methods of Physics

FAQs

A: Students do not need to complete Calculus before starting the minor, but they must take Calculus I and II as they progress through the required Physics sequence.

A: No. The published Physics Minor requirements specify the calculus-based sequence of PHYS 151, PHYS 153, and PHYS 251. PHYS 131 and PHYS 132 form a separate non-calculus sequence and are not listed as substitutes.

A: Not by itself. The minor provides a strong foundation, but graduate Physics programs generally expect more advanced coursework in physics and mathematics than the 22-credit minor requires. Students considering graduate study should discuss additional courses with Physics faculty.

A: The prerequisite sequence requires at least three semesters and may take longer depending on mathematics placement, elective prerequisites, and course rotation. Planning early may make it easier to fit the minor alongside another major.

A: Yes. MCLA students can pursue more than one minor, including Physics and Mathematics. Students should work with their academic advisor to plan both programs and confirm how courses shared by the two minors may be applied.
